Reading Celebrations During October
The slide show on this month's newsletter highlights several fun reading celebrations we held last month. Our Kindergarteners were learning about spiders in their classrooms and the library, culminating in fun 8-legged hats that they made during their library time. The annual Read for the Record day featured all of our students listening to Bunny Cakes being read by a guest reader. Thank to you Colette Blount, Juandiego Wade, Jim Henderson, Malcolm Jarrell, and our 4th graders for being fabulous guest readers! Finally, we topped off the month with our fun-filled Trick Or Read event. In each of their goody bags, students received a flyer about the importance of reading. Check out these statistics! Report Card Formatting Changes
Your child’s report card has been re-designed this year in order to better communicate how your child is performing compared to grade level benchmark expectations in each of the core areas of learning. A sample report card with descriptions of the changes will be in your child's report card envelope. The same report card is being used for all grade levels, so we have broken down the core areas into the large reporting categories (or “strands”) that our standards fall under. For information about which specific skills or objectives are being covered in those strands, we are sending home a document called "Skills and Concepts" for the appropriate grade level. At your parent-teacher conference, your child's teacher will show evidence of your child's performance and explain whether your child is meeting, nearly meeting, or below expectations for this time of year. In addition, your teacher will share a tool with you that will help you track your child's reading progress over the course of the year. It is our hope that the additional information about your child's reading level will help you select books at home that are appropriate and enjoyable for your child. Over the course of the year, the formatting of the report card will change slightly (to accommodate four quarters’ worth of information) and a new document will be inserted to help you track fluency, word study and guided reading progress. We hope that this new format is more user-friendly and descriptive. As always, teachers are happy to answer questions about your child's performance and progress. If you have signed up to access your child's report card in PowerSchool, you will still receive supporting documentation, but you will not receive a printed report card. PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN YOUR CHILD'S REPORT CARD ENVELOPE. WE WILL SEND ALL REPORT CARDS HOME IN THE SAME ENVELOPE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. When Your Child Is Sick or Absent...
Please send a note to school on the day your child returns. You may also choose to send an email. If you do, please send the email to your child's teacher and our secretary, Lori Lawson, at [email protected]. Remember that students must be fever free for 24 hours without medication and free of diarrhea or vomiting for 24 hours prior to returning to school. |
