Venable Night With the StarsJoin other Venable families for a night of planet and star gazing at McCormick Observatory on Friday, May 10! The event goes from 9pm-10pm, weather permitting. Please return the reservation form or call the school no later than Tuesday, May 7 so that we can give the observatory staff an idea of how many of us will be coming.
Venable Greenhouse Project is a Win-WinIf you haven't yet seen our almost-completed greenhouse, come by the back parking lot for a peek! In partnership with the UVA Global Sustainability class, our 4th graders learned about the greenhouse effect, and reusing, reducing, recycling. A plastic bottle drive at both Venable and UVA resulted in hundreds of bottles being put to re-use in our garden. Congratulations to the Global Sustainability students on a job well done--and on their first place finish for the poster contest about this project for their class. http://uvatoday.org/blog/?p=5417 Looking Ahead to 2013-2014It's hard to believe, but after SOL testing this month, we will be working hard to prepare for next school year. We use a thoughtful, deliberate process to place students into classes for the next school year. This process includes input from specialists as well as homeroom teachers about academic and social needs of the students. It is a big puzzle and parents are a part of the puzzle. In order to help us make the best placement decisions for your child, please put in writing to Mrs. Kershner your answers to the following questions about each of your children (each child on a separate document):
You may choose to send your responses through email or on paper through June 15. Want to Share Your Passion with Students? After a successful launch of a mini-elective series for 4th graders this past fall, we are beginning our planning for a new series for next year. Do you have a skill, profession, or passion that students might want to learn about? We need your help! The goal is to provide students with a variety of choices to engage the curriculum in ways that are personally relevant or interesting to them. We are seeking community leaders, artists, business executives and faculty members who might be interested in teaching seven 45-minute sessions on a topic of their choosing to a small group of 4th graders during the school day (on a Friday). Contact Mrs. Kershner if you are interested in talking more about this opportunity. You can also get more information from Mr. Webb's website: http://venablequest.weebly.com/4th-grade-electives.html
