Sensational Soul Fest!
We had a wonderful time at Soul Fest last week. Thank you to Leslie Hunter, Myrtle Houchens, Nancy Mimms, Brenda Payne, Tabitha Enoch, Michael Salvatierra, Valeta Paige and Beth Schrank for coordinating this awesome event. Thanks to Mrs. Tatel for organizing the book give-away and Mrs. Martin for her technical support during the performances. We had help from UVA APO and SVEA student groups, as well as performances by the Hullabahoos and AcaDemix. Mr. Whitten's African Drums and dancing were also a big hit. Most of all, our student performers stole the evening with their music and oration. Thanks also to parents and friends who gathered with us, brought wonderful food to share, and helped our students shine as we celebrated Black History Month at Venable! March Book Madness at Venable
We are celebrating March Madness with some brackets of our own! Students are listening to books on this bracket and voting for their favorites. Students in grades 2-4 will listen to the books during lunch and students in K/1 will listen to them in their classrooms. Half the books are classics and half were published in 2014. Ask your child about the books and how they voted! Your family can get in on the action, too!
Student Achievements Celebrated
Congratulations to Natasha Levine, whose story, "The Harp" will be featured on CAT buses around town through the Bus Lines Poetry Contest. Natasha wrote her poem in response to an image in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, by Chris Van Allsberg, and the story starter: "So it is true," the thought, "it is really true." Natasha's winning entry is below: "The Harp" “So it is true,” he thought, “it is really true.” The legend of the harp player was true. The harp played a slow, creepy tune. Woo-woo. An owl hooted. The boy jumped. “Ah, it was just an owl.” Woo-woo. The noise came back. And this time it was not the owl. The boy fled. The harp stopped playing. The young maiden that played the harp fled, afraid to be seen. Welcome to Nurse White!
Amy White will be joining the Venable staff this Friday as our new full time nurse. Amy has experience as a nurse at UVA and as a mother of 3. She has worked as a substitute nurse in the school division and was a summer school nurse this past summer for two of our schools. She comes highly recommended, is already familiar with many CCS policies and procedures, and is eager to get to know the Venable community and get started. Please stop in to meet her the next time you're in the office! HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS, HEALTHY KIDS 2015 Spring Fund Drive
This PTO fund drive is under way, wrapping up at our Spring Fair on March 20th. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for a track around the lower field. By installing a track, we can improve physical fitness, help lower obesity, and enhance school performance for all Venable students. The track will also serve as a valuable amenity for the entire community. To date we have raised over $2,000, but we need your help to meet our goal! Please send donations to: Venable Track Fund Venable Elementary School 406 14th Street Charlottesville, VA 22903 Make checks out to Charlottesville City Schools, with Venable Track Fund in the memo line. All donations are tax-deductible, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the track. Thank you for continuing to support Venable! If you have any questions, please contact[email protected] |
