Because several of our ongoing clubs are run by UVA volunteers, and because winter weather often shortens an already short winter club session, we have modified our second session club schedule. Rather than having a session 2 and a session 3, we will offer one longer session of clubs in 2015. Clubs will run from Feb. 2 until April 2, with no clubs the week of March 9 (UVA Spring Break). Club sign-up forms will be sent home in Thursday folders on January 22 and will need to be returned by Tuesday, January 27. Clubs are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, with the exception that students who participate in McGuffey tutoring are given priority for Tuesday clubs. Assignments will be sent home on Thursday, January 29. |
Bundle Up for Cold Weather!
All signs lead to a cold January. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for being outside. We monitor weather warnings and try to provide outside time every day, as long as it is safe and not precipitating. Because several factors go into weather safety warnings, there is not a temperature point at which we automatically cancel recess. Sometimes very cold temperatures mean a shorter recess, just to run and get some fresh air. Please do plan for your child to be appropriately dressed for some outside time, even if it is just waiting at the bus stop or walking to school. Nominate an Outstanding Venable Teacher for the Golden Apple Award
The Golden Apple Award program is designed to honor outstanding teachers in public and private schools in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City. One winner is selected from each school, and eight winners also will receive a $1,000 Golden Apple Grant, which can be used for classroom materials or to support the recipient’s professional development. Please consider nominating a teacher at Venable who has made a difference for your child. Nomination forms should be submitted to Mrs. Kershner by the end of the month and are available online at http://www2.k12albemarle.org/dept/instruction/Pages/golden-apple-award.aspx. Midyear Assessments for Students
During the month of January, teachers will be collecting more formal information about students' progress in reading and math. The manner and number of assessments will be different depending on the grade level, but may include:
Congratulations to Mrs. O'Brien and her homeroom class. Due to their consistent "green light acquisition" on Reflex Math, Mrs. O'Brien's name was entered multiple times into a drawing for an iPad Mini from Explore Learning. And she won! Her class also won a pizza party, which they will use some time this month.
There is a possible location change for the After Party on January 18. Please check Facebook page or web link above for the latest information.
