Kindergarten Registration This Month
Thursday, April 23 from 3:30-6pm Please spread the word that we will be open from 3:30-6pm for all families who have children who will be attending Venable next year and need to register for the first time. While this is advertised as Kindergarten registration, we will also be accepting registration documents for students in other grades. K classrooms will be open for students to visit while parents complete paperwork. Required documentation and sample forms are available on the CCS website: http://www.ccs.k12.va.us/schools/registration.html |
Fourth Quarter Has Begun!
It's hard to believe, but the last quarter of the school year is upon us. Third quarter ended on March 27 and report cards will be sent home on Thursday, April 16. We have already begun SOL test simulations for reading and math in 3rd and 4th grades so that we can give students an early chance to get the jitters out and give teachers information about what skills still need shoring up. Official SOL testing will begin in May. Recommendations for summer school have already been sent home and forms are due back by April 17 in order to guarantee a spot for your child. If you have questions about your child's performance, please contact your child's teacher for a conference. Congratulations to Diane Forasté!
Mrs. Forasté, one of our first grade teachers, was named Venable's 2015 Golden Apple Award winner on March 11. She will be officially recognized at a ceremony in May. Congratulations, Mrs. Forasté! March Book Madness at Venable
Students have been working with Mrs. Cartwright to tally and represent the data collected from our March Book Madness event. They've made Lego-stick representations, pie graphs, tables and charts to show different ways to model fractions and percents. Just like in basketball, we are down to the final four this week: it's between The Day the Crayons Quit, Creepy Carrots, The Book With No Pictures and We Are In A Book! Special 3rd/4th Grade Chorus Performs at Paramount
On Tuesday, March 24, 30 students in grades 3 & 4 participated in an Amazon Aid Foundation benefit concert. They helped premiere the Anthem for the Amazon, a music video project to educate people around the world about the importance of the Amazon Rain Forest. They joined Grammy award-winning musicians Esperanza Spalding and Wayne Shorter for the event. Congratulations to our students for being selected to participate in this very special event. Our 4th grade chorus will also be performing the National Anthem at a UVA baseball game later this spring. It's for the Birds!
Our garden fairies, Nancy Newman, Jennifer Esser, Donna Morris and Jeremy Lees, worked with student volunteers from UVA's APO service fraternity to create a new bird feeding station at Venable. Located in the back of the school, the station will be monitored and tended by Mrs. Mimms' class. We are excited to see more birds on campus this spring! Thank you, PTO, for an Awesome Spring Fair!
While the weather was not 100% cooperative, we still enjoyed a well-executed, fun-filled spring fair. Thank you to Stacey Johnson and all the volunteers who made the Spring Fair a huge success. In addition to the great fun had by all, our silent auction helped bring in a little over $4000 for the PTO! Schoolyard Gardens News
In February, students enjoyed kale chips prepared by our city schools central kitchen for the harvest snack of the month. In March, we sampled radishes. The attached flyer gives more information about radishes from our friends at City Schoolyard Gardens. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with City Schoolyard Gardens, there's a volunteer training and orientation on April 26 at Greenbrier Elementary (see below).
